Social and economic sustainability

The Council argues that the proposed developments are ‘reasonably accessible to local services and facilities and employment opportunities’. This is not the case.

  • The Cumberhills site, for example, is over 1.5 km to the nearest bus stop and 1.8km to the Duffield train station, which only has 1 train per hour. It is 1.9km to one of the primary schools.
  • Employment in the village is very limited and is restricted to a small number of village type shops (e.g. hairdresser, newsagent) and pubs.
  • Any new houses will probably be occupied by people who will be driving to work in Derby, Nottingham and Birmingham, which is unsustainable in terms of road congestion, pollution and carbon footprint.
