Preserving our heritage and landscape

The Council has not paid sufficient regard to heritage and landscape matters in proposing to develop the Green Belt sites in Duffield. As well as damaging the historic nature of the village, the developments would change the strong rural character of the sites involved.

  • Duffield has the remains of a medieval castle, a medieval church and many 18th and 19th century buildings at its historic centre.
  • The village is surrounded by valuable medieval field patterns and the Council’s own evidence suggests that a Roman Road may run under the proposed Cumberhills Road allocation.
  • The village is close to the Derwent Valley World Heritage Site(WHS) – our Green Belt ensures that the mills and factories of the WHS, dating back to the industrial revolution, are preserved in their original rural landscape.

The village has already seen a significant expansion in recent years, with large sites developed on Holloway Road, Cumberhills Road and currently on Derby Road.

The number of new houses now proposed By AVBC (245) would increase the village population by around a thousand – a 20% increase on the present figure.

This would change the atmosphere, making Duffield more like a town than a village, and would create more pressure on the historic heart of the village which already suffers from congested roads and a lack of parking.
