The Green Belt prevents settlements from merging into each other, forming a distinct boundary between towns and villages. Without it, Duffield would merge into Quarndon, which, in turn, would merge into Derby.
The Green Belt on the Cumberhills site, which separates us from the village of Quarndon, is a narrow strip, and there is already inter-visibility between the two villages. Any further encroachment would threaten to destroy both communities’ sense of identity, place and belonging.
- Removal of this Green Belt would undermine the feeling of openness residents’ enjoy – particularly when walking the footpaths.
- There are significantly long views from both the Cumberhills and the Wirksworth Road site – these would be lost if the development were to take place.
- The value of this very accessible green area for outdoor exercise became apparent to all of us during the lockdowns, confirming its value for our quality of life.
It is likely that if the Green Belt sites currently in question are developed, further erosion would inevitably take place as the new boundaries proposed are very weak.
The remaining green belt area behind Broadway would soon be subject to ‘rounding off’ as would the land to the north of the Wirksworth Road site.
